“These paintings are the results of very energetic and joyful discoveries I made from 2000-2002. At the time I was very excited about the action painting of the 1950’s New York School artists. Memphis, Tennessee abstract artist, Pinkney Herbert introduced me to those guys while I was a Resident at the Penland School of Craft. They were started on the floor as charcoal drawings, rotated often, and rather aggressively painted with no expectations other than to build thickness. There was a lot of Coltrane in the air. When forms began to emerge, I hung them on the wall and went deeper. I love oil paint and being lost in creating in it.” |
